BALLERINA BEAUTY

This year marks the beginnings of out of the home extracurricular activities and learning experiences. Preschool and ballet. Layla and I were both whirling with excitement as she donned her powder pink leotard and tights. Top knot bun in tow and her ever growing bare feet itching to learn coordinated movements. A few tears collected in my eyes as I welcomed the excitement of new things to come. My relationship with Layla continues to change as each new experience materializes. My heart felt pride and sadness when I watched her prance away from me and into the ballet studio, without a fleeting look of nerves in her eyes. She was completely prepared to let go of my hand and grasp onto the offerings of the amazing ballet studio that has been in practice for over 51 years. She loved every single minute of it and couldn't wait to show us her moves when we got home. She is such a dream.

A PICTURE'S WORTH...

Get ready for picture overload.  I couldn't help myself. She's just too darn cute, and sweet and full of life.

Layla really wanted to help plan her party this year and she is OBSESSED with the color purple. So we had a Purpilicious party and sorry for the fuzzy pics, our camera was lost so phone pics were all we had!

We decided to forgo the traditional cake and serve up individual lava cakes to each guest! Purple spoon and "buca bird" washi tape adorned the individual jars of deliciousness.

We customized the only purple pinata we could find, with more purple. The pinata is a must have tradition we started on her first birthday.

Kids stood in line awaiting their turn to whack the pinata. I made a custom birthday banner that ended up being less impressive than the picture I had in my mind.

Birthday girl taking a turn at the pinata

Every guest went home with a thank you gift bag that included: Purple Slime that we made, purple pencil, purple balloon, punching balloon, candy and a purple whistle.

After the party, we arranged for Kevin's mom to watch the brother bears so we could enjoy a little one on one date time with Layla bug. Our date included a little dancing with daddy while we waited to eat dinner. And the new Despicable Me movie, the original is one of Layla's favorites.

We can't believe she's so grown up!

Some fun facts about this darling little miss Layla:
*She loves to sing, sing, sing, all day long - constantly making up songs and singing about anything and everything

*Is turning into quite the little fishy in the water, despite her total resistance to put her face in the water. As long has she stays dry from the chin up, she loves to swim, swim, swim.

*Reading books is a "must" part of the day and she loves taking trips to the library where she picks out all sorts of fun new books each week.

*This girl doesn't miss a beat. So intelligent and can understand the most complicated of adult conversations (we have to be super careful about who and what we talk about around this little sponge!)

*Has a memory like an elephant. She'll ask me "Hey mom, do you remember when......?" And she'll refer to something that happened 9 months ago on a random day. Serious memory skills.

*Loves to color, but hates to color inside the lines.

*Oh the biting of the nails! Worst habit ever and I can't figure out how to get her to stop! She bites those nails day and night until there's nothing left!

*She still has her squeaky little voice that sounds like a mouse. And it never stops talking, asking questions, or giggling. Too cute.

*Can't ever seem to get enough of her bike (just like daddy)

*Beautiful, the most beautiful spirit that lights up the room. Always. People still stop us in the street to tell us how beautiful she is.

*Apple juice is ALWAYS her drink of choice. ALWAYS.

*10% in weight, and 50% height

*One of the BEST big sisters a mom could as for. She loves to climb in her brother's cribs and read them stories, sing them a song, or pretend to be the primary president and ask them to come to the front of the room to say the prayer. She helps them at the park and loves to great them in the morning and kiss them goodnight. So much love in this girlies heart.

*Loves to dance and is starting ballett in the fall! She'll be a natural for sure.

As for her 4th year of life... it was a pretty fantastic one. Here's a few pics to prove it.

Lots of bike races last fall! This was her very first bike race at our favorite "Snowbasin Ski Resort." She was a little gun shy to push past the slower riders in front of her, but she's since learned. All winter she begged, "when can I race my bike at Snowbasin again mom?!"

Game face.

She loves her little brother's. And everyone thinks she and Rider look exactly alike.

LOTS of family outings including jogging up the canyon in the "triple threat" stroller. We only use this gigantuan jogger when Kevin or I want to get out and exercise with all the kids in tow. They love it, Kashi isn't too sure about it.

Easter is always such a special holiday because it reminds us of meeting you for the first time and finding out we were going to be blessed with a baby girl!

Layla is a daddy's girl for sure. There's been lot's of camping trips filled with hiking and exploring. Layla thinks sleeping in a tent is the most exciting thing in the world!

Her cousin Chloe takes Layla for rides on her horse and we love to cheer for Chloe and Yankee at their western style horse shows.

Daddy daughter dates at Johnny Rockets are a monthly outing they both anticipate.

Summer days playing in the yard, drawing hopscotch on the sidewalk, digging in the sandbox, jumping on the trampoline with the sprinklers on, and finding "rollie pollie" bugs.

Early AM Bike races in the mountains. Riding on Daddy's "monster truck" Unimog around the race venue. Layla is the "Kuhl Kid" on the block.

Icecream trucks playing music circling the neighborhood and delivering a hello kitty popsicles. And it wouldn't be a summer day without Otter Pops on the trampoline.

Baby brother bear. Owen, in other words, layla's favorite baby to take care of. She LOVES to give him his bottle each morning, she sings him to sleep and when their not fighting over toys... they are usually scheming against mom.

Layla and her "anything" doll. It's really named Anything. Layla and Anything are inseparable, she is such a nurturer.
Although, come to think of it...Anything does seem to take a lot of naps these days :)

Parks, parks, and more parks. Layla loves to be outside and she loves to be a helper. She is the first one to offer to catch her brother bears at the bottom of the slides, or help them up the steps.

We are oh so lucky to have her.
But we know she is loved by so many others.
And we know our blessing was another's hardship.
We'll never forget how blessed we are to be her parents, and we'll never forget the angels who brought her to us.
May you feel our love for you also and know that as much as you think about her... we think about you.
Happy 4th birthday.
All our love.

PURPILICIOUS TURNS 4!!!!

Our Layla bug is growing too quickly! She awoke today squealing in delight when she saw her room filled with purple balloons covering the floor! Layla loves PURPLE EVERYTHING. Our house is filled with crayons of every color except purple these days, because she has used every single purple crayon each time she colors. She won't color or paint anything except purple! So cute.
She planned a PURPILICIOUS PARTY based on the book. We let Layla chose the activities, the food, she helped pick out he decorations and invitations. She couldn't get enough purple. This morning she requested purple pancakes, so we're headed upstairs right now. We've spent the morning talking about her Katie Angel and how tiny Layla was when she was born. She loved seeing pictures of herself wearing her little newborn"sunglasses" in the hospital. And she always loves to hear the story of her angel helping her find her mom and dad.

We'll post pictures later today after her party! She's hosting a party for 11 friends today and a dinner party for all of our family tomorrow after church! We love you all and count our many blessings to have Layla bug in our family. She is a joy, a light, and the life of our souls.

BEAUTY

Kevin took this picture of Layla yesterday when we stopped by his office to visit. We had just been to the local Bird Aviary on a field trip for Layla's Joy School Group. She is so beautiful. Later that night when Kevin showed me this picture, for some reason, it literally took my breath away and tears began to well in my eyes. I am so blessed. She is a miracle. And my second thought after seeing this picture was, "she looks just like her Katie Angel." Oh how I'm sure Grandma Cindy can probably see the resemblance! Those sparkling eyes... just like her Angel.

How is she growing up so quickly?

YEAR OF THE SNAKE

Chinese New Year traditions are still going strong around here.
Layla is as beautiful and vivacious as ever.
She sings all day. Non stop. She sings about everything and it's the perfect soundtrack to our lives.
She is amazingly talented and as smart as a whip.
Her gift for music is unbelievable and she can remember a song after only hearing it once or twice.

She loves primary. She is a Sunbeam.
How time flies.
She loves her family. She loves her bike. She loves to hike. And she loves to play house.
She calls her brothers "the brother bears" and if you're playing house with her... she gets to be the mom and I get to be "sweetie"
She's a miracle in every sense of the word.

UNDER THE SEA & TURNING THREE

How is Layla three whole years already? We're not ready to say we have a three year old... it seems too grown up. But here she is and she's amazing. She is growing into the funniest, feistiest, and darlingest (not a word but sooo describes her) little girl. Her little personality is coming out and it's hilarious some of the things she says. Kevin and I just look at each other and wonder "where did that come from?" She makes the funniest facial expressions and she loves to laugh.

Layla picked the theme for her upcoming birthday party - UNDER THE SEA. She helped stuff the candy and prizes in the fish pinata that she picked out. The kids will go fishing over the sea scape scene decorated fence for a prize of sorts. We've made sandcastle play-doh and the children will each get to create and decorate with sea shells, their own sandcastle to take home. Layla wanted to serve gummy fish, gummy sharks, and gummy octopus treats along with gold-fish crackers and blue punch. She can hardly wait and is just ecstatic about her party. She tells every stranger in the grocery store about it and she recites perfectly "my birthday is July 6th."

She's the best big sister there is and she adores her "brother bears," as we like to call them. We still call her by the nick name Buca Bird (don't know where that even came from but it has stuck) She starts Joy School this fall and she can't wait to wear a back pack (a pack pack is her name for it). We've settled into our new home and she absolutely loves having her own big girl room and a big girl bed. She has a wonderful imagination and loves to dress up and pretend to be a mom. She always says to her brothers, "I'll be the mom and you be the babies... do you need a drink of juice or do you want me to sing you a song?"

She's fire and ice and sometimes her stubborn temper gets the best of her but she seems to enjoy understanding the boundaries and knowing the rules. She likes to please and loves to hear us tell her how proud we are of her when she makes good choices.

She is amazing and we can't believe she's such a big girl. She's still our baby girl and we still love to snuggle her in bed and baby her every once in awhile.

She knows her story now by heart. The one we tell her at night about how an angel helped her find us and how she helped her angel find her Heavenly Father again. She says, "and Katie Angel snuggled me and fed me a bottle like you feed baby Owen?" And we tell her how loved she is by people all over the world. She smiles and her spirit lights up as if to say, "wow, I'm so lucky."

She's little ripper on the bike these days.

And as you can tell by her smile... she LOVES when dad takes her on bike rides in the trailer.

Breakfast on the deck with dad has become a new tradition at the new house and she insists on eating toast with honey EVERY single morning.

I LOVE TO SEE THE TEMPLE

Layla trying on her temple dress and shoes and giving her best "Cheeze" for the camera

Layla has been preparing to go to the temple again this week. She couldn't be more excited for her brother to be a part of her family forever. We've spent many of our recent family home evenings talking about eternal families and what it means to go to the temple to be sealed. She has been practicing her "temple voice" which means she whispers. And she can't wait to play with the toys in the temple nursery as she waits for the ceremony to begin. She wants to wear her white temple dress every day and we have to explain to her that it's only for the temple - every day :) She's been practicing praying and because her brothers have both been quite sick these past few weeks she has witnessed her dad and grandpa give them blessings. So now she talks about going to the temple to have special blessings and special prayers. And each night as we tuck her into bed she sings "I love to see the temple." Her sweet angelic voice is the closest thing to an angel on earth as one could imagine - enjoy:

OWEN M. DAY
Born January 14, 2012
7 lb 3 oz

Layla loves her brothers so much.
She bounces from one brother to the next giving kisses and offering binki's.
She is the sweetest big sister a person could ask for.
She's adjusted amazingly well and has been showered with gifts and attention from all during this time of new additions.
She can't get enough kisses from her brothers and loves to hold them and tickle their heads.
Rider is infatuated with Layla.
He giggles and smiles every time she looks at him and says "Hi buddy!"
He won't take his eyes off her and she is just as sweet to him in return.

Our cups runneth over.
